County schools considering ways to control class sizes
Washington County Public Schools needs to think "out of the box" when it comes to class sizes, school board member Melissa Williams said.
Reducing class sizes has been one of the issues that officials have been considering when discussing the school system's budget.
Washington County Board of Education member Wayne Ridenour said during a Feb. 2 board meeting that everyone wants to reduce class sizes.
But even if the school system budgeted more teachers to create smaller classes, Ridenour said he didn't know where they would put those classes because schools are running out of space.
Instead of needing another classroom, there could be two teachers for one class of 30 students, Williams said at the meeting.
"I think we have to think out of the box," such as teaming teachers and reconfiguring the way instruction is provided, she said.
